The Qantas flight QF144 issued the emergency warning mid-flight after one of two engines on the Boeing 737-800 failed.

After disembarking, passengers told the media the crew kept the atmosphere on board calm and professional and didn't inform them of the engine failure.

Qantas said they would share more information about what happened after the plane had been assessed by engineers. Mr Bates said pilots practise for a single engine failure at least four times a year and would be well prepared.

'Surprising'? Not surprising. The way alan joyce has driven Qantas into the ground, destroying the brand. Sacking the workers, including the engineers who had proudly maintained the aircraft. It was once one of the safest and reliable brands. I will never fly Qantas again

Who cares? There’s no real difference in the call other than priority amongst other emergencies. Might as well go with mayday until you’re sure you have the situation under control then downgrade it to a pan.

The pilots cancelled the Mayday and Reported PAN PAN.

I wonder how big a bonus he’ll get for an engine failure? Now,,,,let’s discuss Scotty’s $17 Billion purchase of Single Engine fighter aircraft!

Dont care about the science or economics but Boeing and Airbus need to reinvest in 3 or 4 engine aircraft, particularly over large bodies of 🚿

So one ex-Qantas pilot is Australia's aviation industry?

Twin engine 737 and you lose one engine? So it's a standard procedure?. I would kinda call that a Mayday until the situation is under control to downgrade to PAN. Then hope and pray the other doesn't fail 10000 feet. No thanks

*Aeroplane

flying on one engine is a standard procedure..........maybe that lesson was missed

Your commentator needs to get out more and listen to the mayday calls that are frequently made and played on aviation YouTube channels. Engine failures are routinely issued as mayday before a downgrade to pan pan pan.
