Gordon Food Service Stores are opening in Texas, starting with six in the Houston area. The stores are designed to serve restaurants and are open to the public. The stores will serve local restaurants buying in bulk and customers planning tonight's dinner.
Four stores will open Tuesday at FM 1960 West at Stuebner Airline Road in the Champions area, Westheimer at Dairy Ashford in west Houston, Mason Road at Kingsland Boulevard in Katy, and at West Main and Highway 3 in League City. Two more will follow in the coming months at Antoine and Pinemont in northwest Houston and North Braeswood Boulevard at Chimney Rock in the Meyerland area.
Expanding to Houston was a natural extension for the company, which gained a presence with acquisition of Glazier Foods Co. nearly a decade ago. Founded more than 125 years ago as a butter and egg delivery service, the family-operated company opened its first store in Wyoming, Mich., to serve restaurants that ran out of products between deliveries. The company has 175 stores in 13 states with locations in major markets across the Midwest and a growing presence across the Southeast and now Texas.
