Investigation determined Gilbertson Enterprises failed to protect quarry worker injured two years ago while attempting to replace drive belts on 3,700 lb. motor

An aggregate company based on St. Joseph Island is facing a stiff fine after a worker was critically injured while doing maintenance work in a quarry north of Wawa, Ont. two years ago.

A Ministry of Labour investigation determined that rigging used to hoist a 3,700 lb. motor for a portable cone crusher was inappropriate for lifting after the motor, which was connected to a loader using chain slings and hook, fell while a pair of workers attempted to replace drive belts on the partially suspended motor.

An engineer for the ministry also determined that it was possible the tension in the failed chain exceeded the weight of the load and the strength of the chain in the circumstances.
