While the merger of UniSA and the University of Adelaide is being spruiked by the SA government as a once-in-a-generation opportunity for the state and its education sector, it is far from a fait accompli.

As might have been expected, there has been a mix of views about whether turning two unis into one is a good idea. "We have modelling which indicates quite clearly that the future university will be ranked in the top 100," Mr Lloyd said.It's estimated that, in just over a decade's time, a combined university could contribute $500 million a year extra to South Australia's economy compared to what the two current universities put in.By 2034, research revenue is also expected to be $77 million a year more than current levels.

Outside of education, the Adelaide Central Market Authority has made its feelings known, telling the committee that more students would be good for business.There's not a lot in the public domain as yet when it comes to the risks associated with the merger.
