Water companies were given permission to invest £793 million on green projects after the pandemic, but are currently behind the spending target

This includes Thames Water, which by the end of 2022/23 had spent just £1m out of the £72m it has been allocated to install 204,700 smart meters in customers’ homes.According to Ofwat, the water companies had spent the following amounts by the end of March 2023 :. Ofwat said the company is making “some positive developments”, including on plans to rollout 157,000 smart meters.

The firm said it has installed almost one million smart meters in customers’ homes as part of a wider rollout of the technology. Other projects, including schemes to improve river water quality and investigate sewage discharges, are currently on schedule. A spokesperson for United Utilities said it was currently on track to deliver all of its Green Recovery projects despite having spent less than 5 per cent of its allocated £64 million by March 2023.
