In 2023, 36 workers were killed at mine sites of its members

The latest report on the safety performance of its company members from the International Council on Mining and Metals shows that 36 workers lost their lives in 2023, an increase compared to 33 the year before.The report analyses fatalities and injuries at 25 ICMM members and provides safety performance metrics by country and company. Many major miners, such as BHP, Rio Tino, and Teck, are members of the ICMM.

In April 2023, a newly constructed surface waste rock conveyor collapsed, causing four fatalities and a severe fifth injury.Meanwhile, the total recordable injuries have stayed relatively stable year-on-year, with 7,278 injuries reported in 2023 compared to 7,126 in 2022.Because of the increased hours worked, the frequency rate of injuries decreased to 2.59 compared to 2.66 in 2022.
