Impersonation

A least 46 cases of impersonation scams involving the impersonation of Chinese services were reported since Aug 29 with people losing a total of least $958,000, said the police on Sept 10.

The scam victims would receive unsolicited phone calls from a scammer impersonating a staff from Chinese services such as Tencent, WeChat or UnionPay.

The victims would be told that the fees would be deducted automatically from their bank accounts linked to the platform unless they cancelled the subscriptions. The scammer would also increase their credibility or pressure victims by doing any or a combination of the following:
