'I guess you never know what life has planned for you.'

A British expat who ditched his £30,000 a year nine-to-five job in London and moved to America is now running a multi-million dollar cemetery business in the “deep south”.

The couple now service more than 1,000 burials a year and oversee six cemeteries covering 250 acres of land – which they must maintain “forever”. One of the most interesting aspects of the job has been seeing how the number of people being buried changes throughout the year, Tim said. Over the next four years, the pair juggled a long-distance relationship until in July 2018, Tim finally decided to leave his nine-to-five job at Third City where he earned around £30,000 a year and join Shayda on the West Coast.

“It was a stable job and for the first time there was the possibility of getting a mortgage and having 2.37 kids – it was that kind of lifestyle,” he said. The couple, who are due to get married this October, moved to Atlanta and took over the reins of Lincoln Memorial Group in July 2023.
