A gas company had to launch a major safety operation to protect thousands of homes after air leaked into pipes from an offshore hydrogen experiment.

It stemmed from an error at a flagship offshore wind project, which is led by SGN and aims to create a gas network fuelled only by Hydrogen gas. Sources said it could have left boilers at risk of explosion but SGN wouldn’t address what its safety concerns were. It led to customers experiencing a loss of supply and prompted a gas safety check on homes in the area.
