Water companies have been ordered to repay £157.6 million to customers by lowering their costs after missing key targets. But people living in Merseyside will not be seeing any reduction in their own water bills. The water regulator Ofwat has slapped the penalty onto 17 water firms after all missed out on targets such as reducing pollution, leaks, and supply interruptions.
9m Ofwat has already proposed an increase of around 21% - or around £94 per household - next year, which means any price cuts could only amount to a few pounds on household bills. Ofwats says the exact amount will be finalised in December this year. Ofwat's chief executive, David Black, said: 'This year's performance report is stark evidence that money alone will not bring the sustained improvements that customers rightly expect.
