Alba Lopez recalls her coworker, a secretary, declining her invitation to a birthday party, citing safety concerns about Lopez's residence in Wyandotte County. When Lopez asked about the reason, the coworker warned her that her Mercedes would be left on blocks with no tires. Lopez, who lives in a predominantly working-class Mexican immigrant community, found this response jarring and recorded a video of her neighborhood, questioning if her coworker believed someone there would steal her tires.
Lopez's story emerged during NPR's 'Seeking Common Ground' project, which aimed to understand community perceptions in a divided nation. The initiative involved reporters from 10 NPR stations engaging in conversations with nearly 30 small groups across the country. A recurring theme was the lack of exposure and understanding of communities beyond one's own. The project emphasized personal experiences over political affiliations, prompting participants to define themselves beyond their political leanings. In collaboration with Cortico, a MIT-affiliated nonprofit specializing in facilitating conversations and identifying themes, NPR reporters hosted small groups of three to six individuals with common interests. These gatherings took place in diverse locations like Orlando, Florida, western Colorado, Kansas City, Kansas, and numerous other communities
