By day, Andrii Tymofeiuk works as a business analyst, but by night, he transforms into a volunteer drone maker, crafting affordable devices to support Ukraine’s military. Since April 2024, he and a small group of volunteers have been crafting cost-effective drones to bolster Ukraine’s military.
The assembly process occurs in Andrii’s friend’s apartment, where the team dedicates evenings to constructing drones. Despite having full-time jobs, they manage to produce drones efficiently. Due to their learning curve, the first drone took seven evenings to assemble, but they have since reduced the process to about five hours per unit.“The base of support started with just two people, but others joined in, including a friend of ours who lost his leg while serving in the military.
“For example, one soldier needed a drone equipped with an expensive camera for nighttime operations, and we managed to include that modification,” Andrii says. The problem has been further exacerbated as Chinese manufacturers began restricting the sale of crucial drone components to US and European customers, signaling a potential broader export ban by officials,, such as those that Andrii and his team are making, have become essential in Ukraine’s defense against Russia, performing roles ranging from reconnaissance to targeting operations.
Kupol, a subsidiary of the Russian state-owned arms company Almaz-Antey, has developed and flight-tested a new drone model, the Garpiya-3 , in China with assistance from local specialists. One of the documents, a report Kupol sent to the Russian defense ministry earlier this year, outlined the progress of this collaboration.
