“We were talking about horrendous crimes. So I made the decision.” How one DNA test company decided to work with the FBI—and not tell its 1.5 million customers.

The trouble started when the Federal Bureau of Investigation attorney made a personal appeal to Bennett Greenspan.

Mr. Greenspan, president of FamilyTreeDNA, was used to fielding requests from genealogists, customers, even friends of friends, seeking help with DNA testing. The FBI’s Steve Kramer wasn’t among them.

KristenZambo I am not in favor of wholesale turning over information.

Why are you pushing this now? I read it back in August

Cómo un ejecutivo de una compañía de ADN terminó trabajando con el FBI, sin decirlo a 1,5 millones de clientes

Good

Where is the warning from the FBI about this?

How would you feel about paying for a DNA test kit, only to find the DNA Co. sold your gene info to an insurance company wch. found a gene linked to a disease and increased your premium or refused you for pre-existing condition etc?

Fear but a genuine person will not fear for anything.if fbi harass anybody with out any crime then sue them

Sir fbi is national security agency it has every right to check all ppl in the united states of America.a ppl who are committed crimes may

The world is same but so many double standards sometimes

This is old news

RokThunderpunch What 4th Amendment?

I actually appreciate the Alphabet Boys. Tremendous agencies with an impressive track record. A dozen heinous crimes solved for every blunder.

Wall Street Justice!!!

Once you've given it, it's too late.

Funny thing. I was just talking to friends recently and we all agreed that giving our DNA to ANYONE for ANY reason is insane. This is just one example why it’s insane. Our DNA can be planted ANYWHERE and used for ANYTHING and we would NEVER know. Insane.

yep, the FBI and CIA are unconstitutional agencies working not for We the People, more at against us.

talk about being low-key!

Just like Google and facebook and credit reporting agencies and most websites: all of your data is for sale.

We need a digital bill of rights now!

Sound like in china. So what the difference then

just follow the advice of forensic pathologist Dame Sue Black and never sell your biometrics to anyone, ever.

I chose FamilyTree cuz they were the only company in the U.S. that didn’t sell our DNA to third parties for extra profit. We all know NSA/patriot act/govt agencies may necessarily access our DNA.

Dear Lovelies, I'm so grateful to everyone who purchased my new book:👇.❤️🙏 Plus all those who keep retweeting my tweets about the book.😘❤️ Please, the book is still available for download in your Kindle: $2.99 only. I need more support from everyone.

Sooo he’s going to prison?

Did the customers have a need to know?

Read the fine print Dumbasses.

Why is this surprising at all? The first time I heard about ancestry companies and DNA analysis the thought of Gov't involvement/interest was immediately thought about.

Is DNA considered medical data? If so, would these companies sharing this data without explicit consent violate any existing laws around medical data protection?

mafiaaaa

I knew this will happen sooner or later. Something's are better to be left unexplored.

This is why you don't do it. Your DNA is now on file.

I’ll be keeping my DNA to myself, thanks. If I want to know my genealogy, I’ll got to a library.

Read that user agreement.

allthatjaaas13 remind me about this post if i dont tell you more when i get home

Drugs. Law. War. Disease. Nice life when you realize that no one is working for the people. No one.

But aren't genetic data the best thing you have for the future of drug development that will be a blessing uncounted future Generations? If Henrietta Lacks can give a few cells list Untold Millions shouldn't we do the same?

samtripoli hey brother, how many of us saw this coming?

I hope they get sued out of business & this is why you dont use these companies

Who ever sent in their DNA got tricked. Company is making more money off of you.

Been weary of this ever since the dna test kit craze started. Always thought 'I'm going to pay money to give this company my genetic code?' That information is worth so much lol. People are chumps.

You had to know that was an eventuality.

So an unethical company has a shady deal with an unethical law enforcement agency, that’s shocking.

Class action law suit. Invasion of American citizens privacy

shocking.. not. Dna is data.. data is sold and shared under all kind of excuses.. that's the only reason why one would gather it to begin with.. 🙄
