Liberal MP Gladys Liu says she will conduct an audit of her membership of Chinese community groups, as she faces pressure over alleged links to Chinese government-linked groups.

The Hong Kong-born MP has issued a statement to clarify her comments in a Sky News interview during which she refused to criticise China's action in the South China Sea as unlawful.

Liberal MP Gladys Liu pats a koala during a National Threatened Species Day event at Parliament House on Tuesday. In her statement, Ms Liu confirmed her past association with United Chinese Commerce Association of Australia, Australian Jiangmen General Commercial Association Inc and Guangdong Overseas Exchange Association.

"Australia's longstanding position on the South China Sea is consistent ... we do not take sides on competing territorial claims but call on all claimants to resolve disputes peacefully."In the interview on Sky News, Ms Liu said she could not recall whether she had been a council member for two China Overseas Exchange Association chapters from 2003 to 2015.

"This is a test for Scott Morrison. He needs to come to the Parliament, make a statement and assure ... the Australian people that Gladys Liu is a fit and proper person to be in the Australian Parliament," she said. "The prime minister should write to the director-general of security and seek some advice in relation to the matters that have turned up," Senator Patrick said on Wednesday. She asked critics not to view her background with prejudice.

During her interview with Sky, Ms Liu said she was a member of the Chinese Professional and Business Association, which she mentioned in her first speech to parliament.

We need more women in parliament to make things better! 😂

Further proof this woman is not to be trusted

Or ya know - get someone else to audit it, what the fuck is it with liberals and self auditing!! The banks are going to cop it, the electricity providers will cop it, what ends up happening - oh just watch over yourself and we’ll call it a day! WHERES THE TRUST?

I tend not to join groups before I’ve checked if they are linked to the Chinese Communist Party but hey that’s just me.

How else do you explain a career jump from a speech pathologist to the Senior Adviser to the Opposition into Chinese Affairs? Check Linkedin

She lied.

Look, we’ve all carelessly and unknowingly joined Chinese government sponsored groups before.

How can you trust a liar anymore? She should be out of the Parliament.

A test for honour for scumo throw her out and call a by election

PR damage control statements now.

Breach of section 44

I should audit my memberships too? Oh, that's right my professional body does the auditing: not me.

Lol quota chicks in politics.

The poor woman is cornered by racists. She should sue. How many Australian law makers were asked if Americans war campaigns were genocidal

What !! Conduct and audit , what a fool we have in parliament if she does not know which is utter rubbish she like many are avoiding this issue she is influenced by BJ totally

She will do her own audit? Are we expected to take that seriously?

Wouldn't it be better for Victoria police to do the audit independent of the federal government? GladysLiuMP
