Dirk Cotton retired at 52 in 2005, just before the Great Recession. "About 10 years before retirement, start tapering down to end up when you retire with about 40% to 50% equity allocation. Before that 10 years begin, you should probably be somewhere in the 70 to 80% range," Cotton said. "We weren't prepared. Had a recession not happened, we would have kept working," Cynthia said. As that wasn't an option, they had to change their plans.
