The pandemic has forced companies to recognize that giving employees more autonomy is good for business. Here's a script you can use to bring the topic up with your micromanaging boss. (by ericapsweeney)

Even though decades of research emphasize the benefits of employee autonomy, Anicich said employers haven't always been on board with the idea out of fear that workers wouldn't do their jobs unless closely supervised. By spotlighting some of the inefficiencies in traditional office culture, such as lengthy in-person meetings, the COVID-19 pandemic has enabled companies to realize greater autonomy is a win-win for them and their workers.

Also, bring up past instances when you successfully completed projects working autonomously and frame the request around the company's culture and values, Anicich said. For example, explain how autonomy will better unleash your creativity or create efficiencies for you and your employer, if your organization values these qualities.

It seems at times that you're very specific and prescriptive about how I tackle my work. I would like to propose that I own that more. I have so many good ideas and sometimes when you tell me exactly what to do, I'm not able to add in my ideas, too. I also know you have a lot on your plate — so what if we try this? For the next assignment you have for me, we agree on the problem you want me to solve, but then I take it from there and figure out how I can tackle it.
