It’s going to cost a little more to shop at Skokie’s upscale Westfield Old Orchard Shopping Center due to a new 1% tax that will be tacked onto purchases starting later this year.

Skokie lawmakers during their Feb. 7 village board meeting voted 7 to 1 to make the mall a “business district,” under Illinois’provision, allowing businesses there to charge an extra 1% sales tax. The board will take a final vote on the proposal in March.

“The whole idea is to try and keep the area vibrant,” he said. “If we think we can’t go the way of Northbrook Court, or Golf Mill, just watch.” Creating a “business district” includes designating the area as “blighted” to facilitate development and redevelopment by imposing an additional tax, Village Manager John Lockerby told the board.

However, Trustee James Johnson said it doesn’t make sense to designate the upscale mall as “blighted.”

...Why? Like, what is the purpose in this move that couldn't be accomplished by idk, Westfield raising rates on tenants there? The effect would be literally the same. Oh right, it's so that Skokie can look like the bad guy to save Westfield from embarrassment.

vamphire_com I will spend my money at Oak Brook! Better stores and less taxes.
