The temptation to capitalise on one good year could come back to haunt the sector

`Travellers have options and if you simply price the product out of the market, they will look elsewhere'It’s been a torrid two years for Ireland’s critical tourism industry. Strange then to see it currently working to make its own future even harder.

Conor Pope went hotel hunting recently for this paper. Looking at prices for the next week’s bank holiday weekend, he was quoted more than €1,300 for a three-day stay for two at Jurys Inn Christchurch. That’s more than €400 a night for a room in a hotel that might have stepped up from its modest budget roots but is still far from an “experience”. It’s a functional city hotel. The same is true of car hire. Wherever you look, prices have surged obscenely.

But supply is limited, with the need to house both Ukrainian refugees and our own homeless families effectively taking significant numbers of hotel rooms out of the Irish market. Car hire has its own specific issues, having sold off their fleets to survive the harsh times only to find supply-chain crunches mean they cannot scale up again quickly enough to meet increased demand.

Greed, nothing but pure greed! They’ll feel the push back from the punter don’t worry about that

The old adage Rip Off Ireland never went away, an overpriced kip of a country with everyone on the make

Was going to book a hotel for a night in August going to a concert. 250 euro bed only was the best I can find. I'm now getting a taxi home for 85 euro.

Only a matter of time until they lose their 9% VAT rate.

Ireland is overpriced... full stop.

Risk. It fking has. I won't drink in an Irish pub ever again ..

Deffinetly. People are refusing to pay their price and walking out.

It’s only a matter of time adriancummins hospitality

Just remember politicians closed businesses, not a virus with a 99.99% survival rate.

I think this is the new 'level' of prices. The same for fuel. We'll have figure out how to adjust. I just hope that the unsocial hours and the skill of hospitality staff is better rewarded than in the past. Owners take risk every week too- making payroll for 50/100 staff.

Absolutely, a week in Monaco cheaper…

Would love to support our local businesses, do the staycations, but just can’t afford to do so… 😭😢😔☹️😞

Their greed to compensate the losses will take them more down. Anyways looking into current situation in Ireland so many people reluctant to visit. Customer can create or destroy any market.

dam right it does , cheaper to go for two weeks in spain that a goddam weekend in ireland

It's too late. I'll never do a staycation ever again. You get nothing for the price you'd pay for the same time abroad.

Risks? It is happening already, no one will come back

“Risks”? It already has

Lol. And when you are in Dublin you can’t leave from the so-called airport.

Think it's past the whole risking stage to be honest

My wife, sister in law & mother in law are in Dublin this weekend. I'll ask them what their impressions were on their return.
