Residents could soon jet from downtown Toronto to St. Catharines, Ont. in just thirty minutes via a new rapid transit hovercraft.

, Ontario Hoverlink Ltd. said it’s in the final stages of approval for the project, set to launch in summer 2023.

“We cannot wait to finally provide a fast, reliable and sustainable transportation solution that connects tourists and commuters in only 30 minutes.” “The crafts hover on a cushion of air above the water, so they leave [..] no wake or wash,” the release said, adding the noise decibel omitted by the machines is less than a household dishwasher.

There is no transit on the St Catharines side. So who are the users? St Catharines drivers who leave their car there to go to Toronto? It won't be people from Toronto going to Niagara.

michelle__howe awesome!

Only car ferry would attract many drivers.

ToffKX947 Only this year, on our visit to YYZ from the U.K., did we say how good it would be to have a ferry service from the city to closer to Beamsville where our family live. Really hope this is a success and is running for our next visit in 2025.

Finally

Another company trying out this concept. The service will only last for 30min literally. I wish them luck

How much did Pinball invest in this? Consider the money gone.

a good idea, thanks for the info.

This should've been done long ago.

Metrolinx owned Hooverboat

Wait. Didnt we already try this?

What a welcome change. I really hope they include bicycle lanes along the same route. Otherwise, we're just catering to the elite. /s

About time…

For those who are asking this is why it doesn't go all the way to the Falls.

Even a ferry crossing where you can drive on would be amazing.

This would be ok if you could take your car on it, otherwise I dont see much interest in it.

This has been tried unsuccessfully so many times, what makes this venture any different from the others?

Haven’t we seen this before with a boat to Rochester? Might as well have one go to Detroit.

We’ve seen this movie before. A few times. I won’t spoil the ending though.

I’m there!!

abbyjobrien Like a typical Canadian journalist abbyjobrien leaves out half of the story...are taxpayers paying for this service?

All that fossil fuel being used

Trying this out again? Hope it lasts a little longer than the Rochester service.

Was the public clamouring for this? No? So just noise and a whole lotta shaking going' on then. Yahoo!

Take this GOtransit

Here we go again.

Who asked for this?

And Ontario Place to Union Station? An hour walk or half hour bus ride on a shuttle?

30 minutes on the water but total time will likely be the same as driving.

...when will the Hover Ferries carry cars...bicycles...?

This gives me the creeps, I couldn't do it! Super cool though!

Excellent. Then add Hamilton-Totonto,

👍🏽🙌🏽

I love the idea of this but I feel it would be more successful if it landed in the downtown core, not at Ontario Place.

So a terminal that could serve hundreds and hundreds of people would have to be built at Ontario Place. Then there’s the noise. Wave goodbye to public access. Can I get a refund?

Good idea again.

No way this undercuts the Go Train. Will be way less reliable and way more expensive. Again.

I am not sure why no one started this earlier… in order to avoid the road traffic to Toronto connecting Oakville, Burlington and Niagara by ferry would be the most efficient way

This sounds cool, but it takes you to St. Cathrines. Anyone who wants to go to Niagara Falls will still need a second transit connection.

I’d be concerned about the conditions on Lake Ontario. Storms can come up very fast and many large ships have sunk in the past. Just saying.

How many times has something like this been suggested?! It never lasts. I wish it could.

The price will tell outcome

This would be excellent for tourism

Hovercrafts are a great technology but they have not been successfully commercialized.

The idea has been 'floated' before, and trialed, but hopefully it can work and they've learned from mistakes.

I don’t mind a regular ferry boat. Hovercraft can be too noisy.

“– a trip that usually takes two to three hours by car.”

Happens every few years. They never survive.

Nice.

This will be as successful as the Rochester ferry.

A ferry would be. Good idea. Big enough for cars. Save traffic on 403

While I love this idea, why is it only to St. Catherines and not all the way to Niagara?

I remember this type of service was initiated some years ago. I hope that it is successful.

No vehicles onboard means it's doomed. Ferry terminal is a hike without a car in Toronto. Torontonians likely won't take it to St. Catherines where you need a car. It would have been better if this ferry takes you further to Rochester or Syracuse.

We can finally start to get out of the stone age.

How many months do you think this will last? I figure it won’t last to the end of next summer.

'A trip that usually takes 2 to 3 hours by car' 🤣🤣

I'm waiting for the monorail!

Nothing can wrong

This will be so great

It's about time that the govt. give focus on making the public transportation system be more efficient, be it on land & water.

Impossible. Winter is coming

EXCELLENT!

(Pam voice): they're the same picture

FINALLY !!!!

Someone tried and failed already...docks were even built..😏

Trip to the sundowner anyone?

For real this time?

Ontario hovercraft company to launch 30-min transit from Toronto to Niagara regionResidents could soon jet from downtown Toronto to St. Catharines, Ont. in just thirty minutes via a new rapid transit hovercraft. I rather they resumed the Rochester ferry or a similar New York destination, it would cut driving down to NYC by hours. Also, no vehicles on this hovercraft, so what's the point? They tried this in the 90s? It went bankrupt in months? Is Summer 2023 'soon'?
