CAPE BRETON POST FILESYDNEY, N.S. — Even though selling is in his blood, Francis MacLeod will miss the people he dealt with the most as he reflects upon his decades as a vendor at the Bargain Hunters Flea Market, which announced its closure earlier this week after a 42-year run.

“There’s just a difference in shopping habits now and buying online and all the rest of it. The handwriting was on the wall that it was time to pull the plug. I feel sorry for a lot of vendors. For a lot of them, it has been their life for 20 or 30 years and they don’t have a place to go right now.” Its largest recorded crowd was at the former Target store when 374 vendors were set up and were greeted by 2,500 members of the public.

In recent years, Peters was open about his struggles with finding a permanent location for the markets, including the Cape Breton one that bounced from Sydney to North Sydney and Coxheath.
