The UK government may have to buy more supplies of antibiotics to protect primary school children from strep A infections amid concerns that its current stockpile is not enough to cover widespread use 🔴 janemerrick23

in the UK since September. The Scottish government is also looking at giving out antibiotics proactively in schools.

Nick Gibb, the schools minister, told GB News: “This is an ongoing situation, the UKHSA are involved very closely with those schools and they will be providing further advice later on.Cases are expected to rise this week when the UKHSA publishes its latest data on Thursday. There are two major manufacturers of amoxicillin in the UK, Molekula in County Durham and Medex UK, based in Rugby. There are not believed to be unusually high numbers of deaths from strep A in other countries.

“Strep A usually causes a mild infection producing sore throats or scarlet fever that can be easily treated with antibiotics. However, it is important that parents are on the lookout for symptoms and see a doctor as quickly as possible so that their child can be treated.
