Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine said the company whose train derailed and sent up a plume of toxic chemicals needs to stick around to deal with the aftermath. “We’re going to make sure they pay for everything,' the Republican governor said on CNN today.

Hazardous chemicals — including vinyl chloride, a toxic flammable gas — were released after the crash, causing a massive fire to break out and smoke to billow over the town.

DeWine said Wednesday “the company should pay for everything.” He added that he talked to the company’s CEO on Tuesday, who assured him Norfolk would stay in the area until cleanup efforts are dealt with. The company has said publicly, too, that it will continue to assist with cleanup and fund remediation.

When asked for comment on DeWine’s statements about the company, a Norfolk Southern spokesperson referred POLITICO towhere President and CEO Alan Shaw announced a new $1 million charitable fund as one component of its planned support of East Palestine. DeWine had said last week it was safe for residents to return to their homes, as air quality testing has come back clean. But officials are advising residents who do return home to use bottled water, as the release of the chemicals affected local waterways — even killing about 3,500 fish.

Like the wall in Mexico...

What is the price for loss of life now? Or permanent damage to natural resources like fresh waterways? I’ll wait while you tabulate it..

timotheetee That’ll be a first.

Are they testing the water and soil?

Like the funerals for people getting cancer after your “controlled burn”

Who approved it? Governor?

BS. They’ll parade out high paid corporate lawyers to fight every single lawsuit & in the end they’ll pay out a couple of hundred million dollars in fines—peanuts compared to their profits. We need Congress to regulate these beasts. Thank the sup. court for all this corp power.

Putting the railway company in charge of cleaning up their own catastrophic disaster is like catching a bank robber and putting him in charge of assuring every penny of the stolen money is returned properly.

Yes mike_dewine and gop will get HUGE donations from the RR to cover this up Just Like Ohio Energy but with a rail road company..

Suddenly DeWine speaks.

Too bad Gov. The rail line spent all their money on holiday exec bonuses and lobbyists trying to put down improvements in safety.
