The pork industry says stunning pigs with carbon dioxide gas before slaughter is 'science-backed' and legal, after footage of the practice shot by animal rights activists was aired by the ABC's 730 program.

Ms Andrae said although the method of stunning pigs was industry best practice, the footage aired on Monday night may have been distressing to some viewers.

"We are always looking for better and more effective and efficient ways to undertake stunning of any livestock that is under our care," he said. "But we know he doesn't care about that — his role is to rid society of animal industries, period," Mr Hutchinson said. "The footage that was utilised was actually repeated on a loop, so [Mr Delforce] has found specific pigs that reacted in a specific way as opposed to showing us the total process over the day," Mr Hutchinson said.

"The problem here is not about how the footage was obtained. The problem is the lack of action to deal with the pain and suffering that pigs are subjected to through this process."

Australian_Pork shooting the messenger and wishing its cruelty wasn't on display. Legal doesn't mean humane given the issues concerning recognition of animal life as sentient. Disgusting industry and disgraceful people. Would they be proud to show their kids?

Well, if people see how many kangaroos are shot and joeys stomped on to protect grains and veggies, they'll probably won't eat those too.

The pork industry should do as the cattle industry does... **stun** animals who become instantly unconscious. Using CO2 has a similar *effect* as drowning the poor pigs in water. It's vile and unethical.

WE SAW THEM ... Hitting the pigs, prodding them with electric shock ... then listening to them squeal in distress & agony ... thrashing about in a small iron prison - some jumping on top of others, desperately searching for clean air Would you kill humans this way? NaziGermany

I'd like to be a Vegan, but absolutely nothing tastes as good as bacon!

ABC beat-up .. again

ABC is full of over paid elitist yuppies who shames those below them

The 'pork industry' can get in the bin. 🤬

Not a great reference taking your practices from USA as best practice 🤦 . . Best practice would be sleeping gas some sort

Transgender (male) murdered 6 kids last night ABC tried to cover it up Christianlivesmatter

replaying the same footage over and over again was ABC at its pathetic best..........

If the gas were Carbon Monoxide (CO) this article might make sense...

ABC numpties will be clutching their pearls over this, but won't dare to criticise halal slaughter. You bunch of cowards.

I have been to a pig slaughterhouse and have no issues so it's only distressing footage for some. It was also illegally obtained so when will charges be laid VictoriaPolice

Small local butchers. Local. Stop mass production. That’s where the problems lay 😳

Hidden cameras capture carbon dioxide stunning in Australia's pork industryThe use of carbon dioxide to stun pigs before slaughter is legal and widespread – but activists believe the industry doesn't want you to know what it looks like. So were they charged with breaking and entering private property? I saw it too, the look on their faces was kinda ruined by the fact I was eating a bacon and egg sandwich with the bacon grease running down my chin. Damn I'm needing another one. Thank a lot. Now do Islamic slaughter houses .. the seem exempt from stunning their animals.
