Mayor Ron Nirenberg addresses a large crowd as they stand outside of Janie Garcia’s home to celebrate CPS Energy’s milestone of upgrading 30,000 homes through the utility’s SaveNow Casa Verde Weatherization program in San Antonio, Texas, Friday, Feb. 10, 2023.Mayor Ron Nirenberg is raking in hundreds of thousands of dollars in political contributions in a race against eight other candidates who don’t seem to pose a major threat to his fourth and final re-election bid.
The funds are not intended for future campaigns — Campaign Manager James Aldrete said the plan is to spend most of the funds raised on this race. And they aren’t necessarily being raised because of perceived competition. Prop A would decriminalize abortion and marijuana, ban police chokeholds and no-knock warrants and create a city justice director. Nirenberg has expressed concern with the provision that would remove police discretion to make arrests in certain low-level misdemeanor offenses, including theft and graffiti. Most mayoral candidates have raised very little or do not have a finance report yet on the city website.
He doesn’t need the money, he’s got the press giving him free publicity. Anyone who to dares to run against him, that’s not a Democrat, will be slandered.
