The City of Cape Town has decided to pursue an R1.2 billion solar PV and battery storage project, which should shield it from one full stage of load shedding. | News24_Business

The City of Cape Town is proceeding with a new R1.2 billion solar PV and battery storage project to shield it from one stage of load shedding.

The Paardevlei Ground-mounted Solar Photovoltaic and Battery Energy Storage System Project is a 60MW renewable energy project that will be located just outside Somerset West on a site of 400 hectares, which is owned by the city. Shane Prins, manager at the city's Sustainable Energy Markets department, explained that the power project will cost R1.2 billion and the city does not necessarily have the"appetite" to provide all the capital. The city, however, is allocating R447 million from its R2.3 billion budget to end load shedding over three years, to this project.

"This project aims to develop a business case for investment in green infrastructure and nature-based solutions to improve the city's catchment and waterway management," Hill-Lewis said. The C40 Cities Finance Facility is also assisting with feasibility studies on what methods to use.

_Business This is ludicrous and reckeless spending.

_Business Were is the money coming from ?

_Business Well Eskom wants debt relief of R148 billion over next three years so that means it is coming from tax payers pockets. I would go with anything else other than Eskom. Although CoCT does have the mountains so they can use wind and hydro alongside solar.

_Business Streenbras hydro didn't cost this much and already shields us from 1 level. I dont see the logic in spending that much on Solar and probably using up much needed land that could be used better......

_Business JakkieCilliers we want the same

_Business For that amount?

_Business Lesufi 👀

_Business You will never know how much your kindness, support, love and encouragement means to me thank you.❤️ Brandonkaren11 for helping me through your Bitcoin mining investment platform.

_Business I give credit to CoCT for being proactive, but I am not convinced that this is a good solution. 1.2 billion for 60MW? This green energy concept is questionable for me to start with, however I get we need a mix of energy options and post build the cost impact should reduce. 1/2

_Business So this together with the Project in Atlantis?

_Business Funded by the WEF climate conmen

_Business Times that by 10 then R12billion = no more loadshedding

_Business 😭😭😭what do they mean? so if we on stage it means the will be on stage 6 or what i don't understand

_Business Ending Antiwhitism is the only solution. Your billion Rand project will just be a feeding frenzy for crime, incentivized by antiwhite policies.

_Business We need another 10 of these projects to be free!

_Business 60mw is not much for a city like CT. But then again, it might help in powering essentials like hospitals and water works to an extent. Unfortunately I do share the DA's concern on Pebble Bed Reactors based on power output vs cost of these units.

_Business And the other 7?

_Business Is it even worth it? 1/6

MandelaMinutes _Business I mean anything would help honestly but is this just City of Cape Town or does this include eskom customers too?

_Business I know western cape uses 3500MW per day & a bulk of it from Capetown. I just don't know the logic that 60MW will shield CPT from 1 stage of load shedding will actually work. But anyways commendable the city is doing something. Just all politicians baffle me they seem clueless...

_Business 1 stage.

_Business That’s a waste
