The shift is being driven by the rise in hybrid work, shifts in where people live and employers seeking to lower their office costs.
It’s particularly appealing to startups and smaller companies that don’t want to commit to long-term leases, experts say. “The lease has become the enemy right now for some of these companies,” said Jacob Bates, head of flexible office and co-working business at commercial real estate company JLL. According to a JLL report from May, 40% of the companies it surveyed plan to increase their use of flexible spaces, including co-working sites.
