While the merger of UniSA and the University of Adelaide is being spruiked by the SA government as a once-in-a-generation opportunity for the state and its education sector, it is far from a fait accompli.

abc.net.au/news/debate-over-south-australia-adelaide-university-merger/102747032On current estimates, it could be the biggest educator of domestic university students studying full time in Australia.has been sold by the SA government as a once-in-a-generation opportunity, helped by nearly $450 million from taxpayers.

As might have been expected, there has been a mix of views about whether turning two unis into one is a good idea. "We have modelling which indicates quite clearly that the future university will be ranked in the top 100," Mr Lloyd said. It's estimated that, in just over a decade's time, a combined university could contribute $500 million a year extra to South Australia's economy compared to what the two current universities put in.By 2034, research revenue is also expected to be $77 million a year more than current levels.

Outside of education, the Adelaide Central Market Authority has made its feelings known, telling the committee that more students would be good for business. There's not a lot in the public domain as yet when it comes to the risks associated with the merger.
