Ferropolis is a former open-cast coal mine in Gräfenhainichen, Germany, transformed into an open-air museum of industrial machines. The ‘city of iron’ site has a strict waste disposal policy, and deploys solar panels covering 2,901 sq metres to generate the 170,000 kW of electricity needed by the museum to function regularly. It also hosts events such as Melt, one of Germany’s largest outdoor music festivals, which is powered entirely by renewable energy produced onsite.
