The stock market traded at session lows with about two hours left in regular trade Wednesday afternoon. There appeared to be no direct catalyst for the late-session pullback from intraday peaks but declines in the S&P 500 index's energy sector, down by 1.1%, and a sharp slump in aeronautics and defense contractor Boeing Co. BA, -1.50% were among the factors offsetting some of the buying optimism that had helped to push shares up at the start of the day's action.

Stocks set to rise | Caterpillar shares fall | US-China reportedly near trade dealOptimism over the resumption of China trade talks is helping kick start stock futures this morning. US equity markets have been rigged by the FOMC. The Fed, in December 2018, began purchasing equity index futures to stave off the drop they created.
