Thinning out middle management layers, also known as “,” is the latest restructuring option of choice for major U.S. companies, including Bayer, Salesforce, Citigroup and Meta. That’s because, although middle management can improve a company’s organization, cutting down on unnecessary management layers has several benefits.

Unbossing doesn’t have to spell disaster for career advancement—men’s or women’s—though. There are, afterall, numerous benefits to reducing operational friction and eliminating superfluous processes in favor of a more streamlined, hands-on collaborative team structure. Cutting roles that are more focused on micromanaging in favor of meaningful leadership and hands-on positions focused on the work itself is smart business.

Non-traditional career growth plans like these are an exciting opportunity for companies and workers alike and have a lot of potential to improve innovation, morale and profitability. When it’s done in service of employee empowerment, collaboration and satisfaction, unbossing can be hugely beneficial to a business.
