Jon Davey, chief executive of payments provider Tyro Payments, became a teacher after finishing school but realised it wasn’t for him.

I would generally take the dog for a walk, or I go for a swim. I swim with some friends. I walk with my wife and our black Labrador for about 45 minutes.

No. The two or three days that I’m in Melbourne, I’ll probably spend one of those in the office, and the other day working from home. A lot of my time is spent on Zoom meetings anyway, so it’s just as easy to do those from home.I try not to look at my device until I’m back from the walk. I lead a full and busy work life, and I like to try and segment my life into parts that are work-focused and those parts that are not.

I left the bank in 2019. As part of my last role in the bank, I’d been involved in a lot of fintechs and start-ups. One of those fintechs asked me to come and help them with some funding and some investments. We ended up selling the business to Tyro, and I joined Tyro, and then the CEO resigned, and suddenly, I found myself appointed CEO.I often wonder that. I think teaching probably highlighted a part of my personality that enjoys providing guidance and mentoring.

At night in Sydney, I would typically go out by myself to a cheap local restaurant one night, and I probably go out with either a partner or a customer or staff on the other night. You must spend a lot of time in airport lounges. Do you have rules about what you do and don’t eat?
