Rawtenstall ข่าว

Rossendale Council

Adding food halls and specialist pop-up events are just some of the ways councils look to reverse the decline which has seen hundreds of markets close

Before the advent of supermarkets in the 1950s most families did a 'big shop' at their local markets.

Rawtenstall Market is one example of how a different approach to the traditional format can turn things around. The market has been operated by PLAY Market Management through a deal with site owner Rossendale Council but last month the company announced it was to step back. "It's all about bringing new people in. We just want to create a space where there is something for everyone.

Although opinions about the renovation of Rawtenstall Market are mixed - some disagree with moving the food stalls indoors while others object to a general bar instead of allowing stall-holders to continue selling alcohol - the investment is welcome and a sign of the council's confidence in its potential.

For some of the newer tenants, like Turkish Kadir Aktay, the opportunity to bring something different to the market - his food stall Amphora Kitchen - has allowed him to embark on a new career.
