As the excitement from Black Friday subsides, the Better Business Bureau (BBB) is encouraging shoppers to allocate some of their time and money to Small Business Saturday. This under-the-radar yet impactful day promotes the exploration and support of small, local, and independent businesses. Cameron Nakashima from the BBB stated, 'Small Business Saturday was initiated in 2010 by American Express and aims to highlight local businesses when many are focused on national chains.
This initiative has significantly boosted the economy for small businesses and the communities they serve.' Spending a dollar at a small business in the U.S. typically reinvests about 68 cents back into the local economy. The BBB is enthusiastic about this campaign since many of the businesses it accredits are small local shops that warrant recognition and support. To maximize the benefits of Small Business Saturday, the BBB advises looking up local events and deals through the Small Business Saturday website or visiting the local chamber of commerce or merchants’ association. 'Invite your friends and family. Unlike Black Friday, this isn’t a mad rush – take your time at the stores and make it a whole event,' Nakashima added. Additionally, the BBB recommends 'eating small' by visiting independently owned restaurants, bakeries, and coffee shops. Shoppers are encouraged to look for the BBB seal in store windows as a sign of trust. Using location filters in search engines like Google or Bing with 'near me' can help find nearby results, while platforms like Facebook Marketplace and Etsy can be filtered to a specific radius from home
