Market Closure,Bacup,Redevelopment

Bacup Market, a beloved community institution, is set to close its doors on December 28th, leaving residents heartbroken. The closure is due to a planned redevelopment of the market and Union Street, prompting sadness and disappointment among traders and the public.

The community of Bacup is saddened over the 'end of an era', as its long-standing market is set to close. Jayde Holmes, representative of the market stall holders, says Rossendale Council informed the ten traders at the market earlier this year they would have to move from the site so the council can do the prep work for the proposed £8.3million redevelopment of Bacup Market and Union Street.

Traders have dedicated more than 120 years of service combined to Bacup Market which is due to close on Saturday, December 28. Jayde Holmes, who runs the Rossendale Responsible Animal Rescue stall, said: “I will miss the traders. “We are all one family and one community. We are very fortunate we have a loyal customer base and for lots of people a market is where they go to socialise especially for the older generation. “It gets them out of the house and they have spent hours at the market chatting and giggling.” Two traders have decided to retire early due to the closure of the market while others have a shop and will return there and some traders are considering taking online orders. The news of the market’s closure was announced on the Save Bacup Market and Town Centre Facebook page last Friday. The post attracted more than 40 comments from the community, expressing their disappointment. One person wrote: “The end of an era. So sad. It’s a pity it could not have moved to Irwell Terrace. The very best of luck stallholders.” Another social media user added: “This is not what they good people of Bacup wanted. But yet again the residents really have no say. Must thank every stall holder for supporting our town for years.” Bacup Market first began in the old Market Hall just off Branch Street and then moved to Union Street. Residents enjoyed Market days on Wednesdays and Saturdays and Flea Market days on Friday
