The Stilfontein Crisis Committee in North West has described the dismantling of the pulling system in shaft 11 of a disused mine as a recipe for disaster.
The committee consists of community leaders, mining community organisations and human rights activists. So far, community volunteers have used the system to retrieve eight bodies and bring 34 illegal miners to the surface.to those who are still underground. Jenkins says, “There’s been an extremely concerning reality on the ground. The infrastructure has been destroyed to the point where it now creates an extraordinarily difficult situation for the community to completely go through a redesign of the pulling system, which will include the use of large machinery to get some of the big rocks to stabilize the pulling system.”
“This really exacerbates the situation now because on Friday the people underground were unable to get food. We’ll be looking at the situation where neither will food go down nor will there be any rescuing,” he adds.
