At the 2019 Forbes Women’s Summit she was joined by Melissa Bell, the publisher of Vox, to discuss accountability and the outlook of tech power.
Kara Swisher rose to prominence as a founder herself—of tech business media site Recode, which was later acquired by Vox. She founded the site alongside legendary tech journalist Walt Mossberg in 2014. Today she writes for the, hosts podcast Recode Decode and runs Recode on Vox—all entities centered around asking tech power hard and essential questions about their work’s social implications.
First, she says, “They have to accept what they’ve done—and honestly accept it.” Swisher harps on tech founders’ selective noise—their tendency to issue press releases to celebrate themselves—and silence when it comes time to admit wrongdoing and address social issues.
Finally, “Diversity in the ranks of who’s doing this.” She harped on this point. “If it were a more diverse group of people, I’m certain they would not create these products.
