Companies have suggested there is a 'deliberate' effort to undermine the push for stronger press freedom protections.

Media companies have hit out at"insufficient" action on press freedom. In its submission to the inquiry, the "Australia's Right to Know" coalition — which includes Nine, owner of, News Corp, ABC and other major outlets — said the limited scope of the parliamentary probe would not be sufficient to address the wide-ranging challenges facing public interest journalism.

"We are concerned that this will mean that this inquiry will not be empowered to look at the full range of laws that impact on the media's ability to report on matters of public interest and the public's right to be informed of such matters," the submission said."Some have suggested this may be deliberate and reflects an intention to control and limit the debate around these issues and the outcomes that can be delivered.

There is also a specific reference to consideration of contested hearings for search warrants and agencies' requests to access the data of journalists. The companies urged the committee to "take the broadest possible interpretation" of those terms in order to examine problems not related to national security.

In the submission, the companies said there must be "quick and decisive" action and outlined six specific recommendations. They have called for the right to contest warrants, stronger protections for whistleblowers, restrictions on government secrecy, an improved freedom of information regime, protections for journalists in national security legislation, and reform of defamation law.saying in its submissionThe police suggested early warning of a search warrant would "undermine investigations by alerting suspects and providing opportunities to destroy evidence".

Shh.... but ok to lock up Assange

ScottMorrisonMP’s government is making strenuous efforts on PressFreedom... to curtail its ability to expose the nefarious. The same SycophanticMedia aided and abetted this government’s fraudulent campaign for re-election.

Corruption and graft are so engulfed in our governments it would allow their exposure so restrict the media is their answer.

It’s okay, media companies.

You lot were happy to see the rights of everyday Australians taken away with S13C and the AHRC, so suck it up.

You peddle falsehood, get sued then plead for more freedom? Laughable. No sympathy. Pathetic you are.

Why did they push so hard for these bozos in the first place? You reap what you sow, Media Companies
