New fish species found at market north of Brisbane, Queensland Museum says

A new species of rockcod, or grouper, has been confirmed by the Queensland Museum after two years of testing its DNA, following the discovery of several specimens at a fish market in 2017.Four of the fish were caught by commercial fishermen off the coast of Gladstone in central Queensland in 2017genus found around the world

At the time, fish expert Jeff Johnson was contacted about the find, but before he could examine the catch, the fish were sent to a market at North Lakes, north of Brisbane."We've had inquiries from fishermen, from scientists, from the boating and fisheries [department] — every time I'd say 'have you still got the fish' and then they'd say 'oh, we've already ate them or already sold them'," Mr Johnson said.
