Slathering on thick, silicone-laden formulas that promised to both nurture and grow my hair only led to limp, coated strands and an itchy scalp. Despite the fact that black women spend six times more on hair products than white women, shopping can often be a chore for us due to the lack of premium brands that aren’t just, but specifically cater to our long list of needs and have a trustworthy and decipherable ingredients list.

“Things are definitely changing for the better,” says Ekwy Chukwuji-Nnene, the founder of plant-based hair brand. “In this age, black female owned businesses now have direct access to social media to spread the word. We have to create what we need, rather than waiting for mainstream brands. They do not understand our needs and try to ‘rescue’ us with half-hearted attempts just because they’re realising the power of the afro hair market.

The products of my past had been suffocating my fine curls with their filler ingredients. They simply oversaturated afro hair, without bothering to consider that there is a diverse range ofThe best products for every type of mixed race curly hair
