Competition Commission gives companies 2 months to reduce data prices The Competition Commission says major players in the data market, MTN and Vodacom, need to agree to a substantial and immediate reduction in pricing.

The Competition Commission says major players in the data market,The Commission, briefing the media in Pretoria on the Data Service Market Inquiry on Monday, has given mobile companies two months to reduce mobile data prices or face prosecution. The commission has found that mobile data prices in South Africa are excessive. It further found that the market is highly concentrated with Vodacom and MTN having a dual monopoly.

It says against an international benchmark, South Africa performs poorly with prices generally being higher. C ompetition Commissioner, Tembinkosi Bonakele presented the commission’s final data market report. This follows recent calls for data prices, some of which are among the highest in the world, to fall.

Bonakele says:”We do believe strongly as a commission that this requires strong and decisive interventions and we have noted that there have been recent price reductions.” “We do recommend in the report that Vodacom and MTN must independently reach an agreement with the commission on substantial and immediate reductions in pricing.”Communications Minister, Stella Ndabeni-Abrahams, says South Africa is on track for a fall in data prices. She welcomed the report: “I am also happy colleagues to note that I see Vodacom and MTN here which also makes my job very easy.

MTNza Vodacom VodafoneGroup

This is expensive data that people cannot see. Data for 1 day is R11. Tougher

Why reduce? They should all be the same....all networks

They've been preaching

Its Gonna Go to Court and Drag

Why not 2 weeks or evens better 2 days. South African own Vodacom & MTN chargers other African countries far less than the high prices they charge us.

Re tla khutša go tura

The Competition Commission have been sleeping on this issue for way too long because im sure that they too have a data story tell

Hallelujah

Long overdue.

LeboMokwele5 Payback yona? In monetary value. Kgale re gobala while they got richer. They must be charged or refund the clients.

They are day dreaming non of that will happen here in RSA lets forget

Yhuu!they are killing us Data is so expensive the regulator must monitor those companies they don't implement those regulations .

The internet and other social media platforms will finally be more accessible. Money won't be an object in getting connected. We will also be able to stay online longer for next to nothing.

They will reduce before two month and then increase prices again after five months. It's just a mind trivia game.

TebzaS_Andries Agree? So they must collude? WTF

Did the CC have any meetings with ICASA about releasing the spectrum needed by the big players to help them reduce data prices before coming to the conclusion they did? I dont care who owns the spectrum, just license it for use! ICASA_org CompComSA mybroadband

R11,00 p/gb please, nothing LESS !!!!!!!!!!

Enough talking
