The forestry lobby is calling for more funding and access to national parks to support a "massive harvest and haulage operation" after this summer's bushfires, but experts warn that logging burnt forests will cause "unacceptable" damage to wildlife.

"Subject to environmental considerations, state governments should support salvaging timber from all burnt forests across all impacted tenures to clear roads, minimise fuel loads and allow greater flexibility for meeting timber supply requirements," AFPA said.

"Many plants germinate after fire, and they'll get squashed by heavy machinery. So that hugely impairs things like the regeneration and ferns, palms, all kinds of things." "The forest as a whole isn't dead. I'm sure good foresters would agree - I can't ever remember harvesting a mixed species forest. "There are ways to do salvage logging that doesn't impact more broadly on the environment," Professor Keenan said.

Greedy bastards

No way. Wild life habitat we dont want our wild life extinct

I was expecting that!! The forestry lobby. C- ching C-ching! they have never known what they are doing This suggestion is pure criminality and must not be allowed They can't see the trees for the money Only those posing a danger of falling on property or roads the rest habitat.

disastercapitalism

I thought ScottMorrisonMP doesn't believe in knee jerk reactions! This is disastrous. Time we start working with indigenous techniques. How good is clearing the land. Worked so well in the past.

it's money making before anything with these guys. Always an excuse about why they should destroy old growth . simply put, its worth more per acre. Where is all their promised sustainable regrown forest they were going to harvest? Time to ban old growth cutting due to the fires

Well you'd have to agree that the green strategy devised to protect the environment and it's flora and fauna by locking up parks, restricting fire wood collection and cool burns has proven to increase fire severity. Might be time for a re think?

I have been involved in pine salvage...pines do not recover...do eucalypts?

I thought the burnt forrests that were built specifically for their wood have to be logged very quickly to save the wood.

F*** the CFMEU and all jobs in old growth and rain forest areas. For the dumb people in the room, the BushFireCrisisAustralia is BECAUSE of logging such areas. Hazard reduction is a limited option and plan, not logging specific areas is a permanent protection. Wak up !!

The Lorax comes to mind. rethink respect

WTF? how so? The wild life is dead!

Hypocrites!

The unbelievable hide of these pricks

What on earth? There are natural regenerative processes that will be interfered with, if they start logging now! The crap that fuels fires is the understory, the weeds and leaf litter, not mature trees. I hope ecologists will be involved in any impact statements for any approvals

The evil & greed never ends, until, like Easter island, they've cut down the last tree. While we all watch.

Why do we still have forestry?

When the trees are cut down, the grasslands ploughed up, then you will have a dustbowl. Dust storms, drought, dry rivers, dead fish. But the logging industry will be happy.

You guys reckon 1 billion animals died as a result of the fires. So which is worse?

It’s imperative that the arsonists are stopped.

Pass a law to Make it Happen.

Tell then to bugger off - unless they want to live in a future than has no trees to chop down.

So lets wait for the next major conflagration so that immense damage is done to the wildlife. 🤪

Twiggy counting on getting his cows and BS into the Forrest. How apt!?
