ICYMI: The FCC's decision to green-light full commercial use of CBRS band unlocks three distinct opportunities in the wireless market

CommScope, Federated Wireless, Google, and Sony to be Spectrum Access System Administrators that will direct data traffic on the 3.5 GHz Consumer Broadband Radio Service band, clearing a path for full commercial utilization of the spectrum.The CBRS band will be split into 15 channels, with commercial use managed by the four SAS Administrators.

The CBRS band is prime mid-band spectrum that has largely been reserved for government use, but is of great interest to private operators. The CBRS band has been utilized historically by the US Navy to connect equipment on ships and bases. Private companies can establish cost-effective private networks with the CBRS band on their own. Because companies don't need to license their own spectrum, and because they have access to a wide market of CBRS equipment, they can cut the cost of establishing a private network, boosting its appeal — in a May 2019 spectrum auction, operators It will enable network operators to provide additional network capacity.
