To face down big problems, government scientists, academia, and private industries need to work together.
Cooperation among these groups is also how the US is now responding to COVID-19, getting American industry, academia and government to collaborate – to rapidly turn scientific knowledge into innovation to find treatments and ultimately a cure for the deadly coronavirus. And beyond the current emergency, a new era of partnership will ensure scientific progress for national security, health and jobs.
Partnerships are accelerating discovery in the game-changing technologies underpinning the Industries of the Future — artificial intelligence, quantum information science, advanced wireless technologies such as 5G, biotechnology, and advanced manufacturing. All of these technologies begin with basic research. Though it often starts without anticipated practical outcome, over a long time-horizon, basic research generates new applications that can disrupt markets and spark breakthroughs.
And that's what we will need to do in the future, to prepare for any other challenges our world might yet face. Together, we need to develop the most cutting-edge technology, like artificial intelligence and quantum computing – combining the forces of industry, academia and government. We need a coordinated approach to basic and use-inspired research and all work together to leverage investments, share resources, pilot approaches, and agree on standards.
This progress is further motivating ambitious thinking in pursuit of a national quantum infrastructure, including a quantum internet. Quantum information science and technology is a good example of a virtuous cycle, leveraging the inventiveness and capabilities of all partners that compose the US R&D enterprise.
dariogila IBMResearch Tthe alternative is for the government to take over private enterprises, as the Socialist/Communist coalition in Spain just did with private health clinics...just after the government rejected their offer to collaborate!
