OTTAWA – The federal government is claiming $4.4 billion from Canadians and corporations suspected of cheating the taxman by hiding their money in offshore tax havens.
Vignola asked both CRA and the Minister of National Revenue Diane Lebouthillier to detail the results of over $1 billion in investments by the Liberal government to fight tax fraud and offshore tax evasion since 2015. But that $4.4 billion is far from won for Canada’s tax agency. Tax evasion cases, particularly when they involve wealthy individuals and corporations, often lead to notoriously long and difficult court fights for the CRA.
“I think it might be reasonable to expect the CRA might get half of that based on past experience,” said Toby Sanger, executive director of Canadians for Tax Fairness. The CRA claimed $368 million in taxes from the Canadian company, arguing that a bank it owned in the Barbados from the 1990s until 2013 was really just a subsidiary because it got most of its money from the parent company. But the Court of Appeal finally sided with Loblaw, who argued that Glenhuron was a regulated foreign bank under the laws of Barbados.
The minister also promised that some cases will soon be brought before the courts, making them public for the first time.

Soon to be offset by the 200,000 fraudulent CERB claimants, which will total $1-2 Billion out the window in fraud. Problem: Gov spending, facilitated by punitive tax on hard work and success, which drives taxpayers to look for ways to reduce the impact. Solution: smaller Gov.
About time
It's a start.
Hey JustinTrudeau Loblaws yet again 😡 “A recent example of such a loss by CRA is a ruling by the Federal Court of Appeal three weeks ago overturning a 2018 ruling that found that Loblaw Companies Ltd. used a Barbados bank as a tax shelter.”
Remember the names in the Panama Papers that Trudeau vowed to crack down on...
Like all those individuals in Metro Vancouver who, year after year, claim poverty to the CRA but live in multi-million dollar homes?
NBD, just ignore- Said Nobody. Get on it already, FFS!
Now do all the Corporations that operate in Canada & get our money! Then start with the private accounts of multi-millionaires. I have no problem with rich people if they pay their fair share! Time to pony up!
What about multinational companies? Like Uber which avoids taxes?
Any bets on Trudeau and Morneau
Any with offshore accounts in Cayman etc? 🤔🤔🤔
Socks and Willy Porno on the list? Chrétien, Martin?
Watch out, Bob amilton is coming to get you.
Snc lavalin loblaw bombardier morneau shepell McCain curly fries
If you think CRA can actually take any legal actions against the richest in the country then think again, they only come after the poor to collect revenue.
That’s only the tip of the iceberg
Start with Liberal party and their Lobbyists
The mafia always wants their cut..... always.
why doesn't CRA do something about it then.
With both Morneau and Trudeau on that list! Never mind Galen Weston, the Bronfmann family, etc.,
Lets start with all foundations as they are tax havens.
My guess is they won’t get the big cats, there will be millions of little people with $50,000 somewhere in life savings rather than the multi millionaires sheltering millions from tax
Let's start with all federal politicians, including our prime minister then work our way down.
Not mo
Did you look into any off shore accounts for Trudeau, Butts and Morneau ? I’d like you to use your investigative expertise and find that out. This is what Canadians want to read and know about. Do you job!
Hmm..Is just a circus? Or they will finally do something?
Now that would certainly cover our COVID19 bill now wouldn’t it! 😳😳😳
