A viral video of a man mocking the woman who yelled ‘I’m a sovereign’ at Shunfu market suggests we are not walking the talk when it comes to ...

at the Institute of Mental Health to assess if she is fit to plea, the video made by the artist and the praises heaped by scores of people who shared it widely on social media now sit awkwardly.

Prominent figures have come forward to lend their voice. Speaker of Parliament Tan Chuan Jin addressed this issue at the Beyond the Label Fest in September last year.Singapore was also the first country in Asia to host the Together Against Stigma Global Conference in October 2019 where President Halimah Yacob stressed more must be done to support those with mental health issues.

Yet circle back to the YouTube video, which ridiculed the woman with words like “lunatic”, “thick in the head” and “crazy”, and you cannot help but go away with the sense that this is the type of bigotry that perpetuates misguided perceptions and peddles the narrative that those with poor mental health are"crazy people" who act out.

Social isolation, loneliness and economy downturn can cause significant mental stress and agony during COVID 19 but labelling someone with mental illness certainly does not objectively show empathy and certainly an error in perception. But brazen, defiant behaviour is denounced.

This comment section is why I hate singaporeans so much. Shallow asses.

We can empathise local Singaporeans wif mental issues. Tis cb declared itself as a sovereign dun sound so mental to me. More like it is full of misplaced pride. Does it hv a scepter to wave at people? Eh I sounding mental now eh anthea? Bollocks!

Declaring oneself a sovereign hardly would seem being mentality unstable. If anything it’s a cunningly devised means of escaping the law...

What about poor little Elon ?

NAZIpore media strikes again promoting public fear, anger, & hatred🤮🤮🤮 & leehsienloong is what making Singapore sick!

Nobody was mocking her for having mental conditions. They were mocking her for being an asshole

We all must take this seriously during CB, we sacrifice so much to end this CB but she heck care. Her 'sovereign' idea is not fit to our society and she should ban from getting any support from gov as mention by Minister of Law.

Before the open allegations agst Singaporeans on this, main pt nobody knew the woman suffered from any mental ailment nor she hswed signs of such. So such a generalised statement is unwanted nor justified.
