At the height of the COVID-19 lockdown, with box offices shut, actors and crews stood down and the arts and entertainment industry bleeding emergency reserves dry, leading Australian stage producer Michael Cassel gave the performance of his career.Minister for Communications, Cyber Safety and the Arts Paul Fletcher."We had a long conversation," Fletcher recalled on Friday.
Cassel was not the only cultural voice lobbying the government – Fletcher's office held roundtables and video calls with leading industry figures. Fletcher took calls from political colleagues who had major arts institutions or festivals in their electorates, even took notes from his own constituents .
He says it was "appropriate" that the key design feature of the package was to maintain existing structured, formal relationships between employees and employers.
