The government will not appeal the Federal Court's ruling which declared the former Gillard government's live export ban illegal. Labor introduced the blanket ban on live exports in 2011 after an ABC report showed mistreatment of Australian cattle in some Indonesian abattoirs. Attorney-General Christian Porter said "live cattle exporters were dealt with egregiously by the Gillard government” when it made the 2011 decision.
"We don’t ever want to see governments of any persuasion have the ability to make decisions like this again,” she said. Nationals Senator Matt Canavan welcomed the decision, telling Sky News “it’s certainly not about the money for most of the cattle producers, they want that justification for their livelihoods”. “They want to know that governments can’t make overnight decisions, knee-jerk decisions to shut down their livelihoods without proper reasons for doing so,” he said.
