COVID-19 put phone charging business ChargedUp on the brink of failure — until it pivoted to hand sanitizers and made $1.3 million in 1 month. Here's what its founders learned about adapting during a crisis.

The founders of London-based, a mobile phone charging network, were meant to add to their network of 2,500 charging stations in European cities with a further 150 in UK airports, train stations, and shopping centres during 2020. ChargedUp users can rent a mobile charging pack from one station and return it to another. . Fewer people were leaving the house, and when they were, they weren't spending enough time walking around to need a charging pack — especially one others had used before.

In an interview with Business Insider, Tilmouth and Baron told Business Insider how they pivoted their business, and gave tips for small businesses on adapting during a crisis. "The idea sparked to me when I was visiting my local Tesco seeing how there was just a complete lack of protection anywhere," Baron said. After seeing a similar product while visiting Italy, he realised the company could turn its spare mobile stations into affordable hand sanitizing bays with minimal investment.
