Stocks opened slightly lower Thursday, taking a breather a day after the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed above 29,000 for the first time since February. The Dow DJIA, +0.10% flipped between small gains and losses to trade near unchanged, while the S&P 500 SPX, -0.55% fell around 0.6% to 3,560 and the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite COMP, -1.59% declined 1.
6% to trade near 11,860, on track to snap a four-day winning streak. The S&P 500 and Nasdaq closed at records on Wednesday. Ahead of the opening bell, government data showed number of new applications for unemployment benefits fell by 130,000 last week to a fresh pandemic low, but the drop was due to a major change in how the data is reported instead a big increase in people finding jobs.
