Here's what it takes to get a job at elite law firm Latham & Watkins, according to its hiring chairs and 2 top industry recruiters

. These programs, which are free and open to anyone, give participants the chance to try their hand at hypothetical legal transactions and complete legal tasks, giving them a better understanding of what it's like to practice law at Latham. But it's not just enough to do your homework on the firm. A clear idea of your personality, passions, and work style is also crucial.

A couple of questions that interviewers will likely ask, though, include: What are you interested in doing 5, 10, 15 years down the road? And, what do you like to do for fun outside of work? Along similar lines, Macrae said that the firm has a "straightforward, unstuffy, respectful, yet not hierarchical" approach. "If your style accords with that style, try to convey that during the interview process," he said."We're innovative, respectful, thoughtful, and inclusive," said Qureshi.

"A number of firms will stress collegiality as one of their core values, but it really is true at Latham" said Macrae, describing how he once noticed how respectfully a senior partner engaged with and took into consideration the input of a younger associate. Reflect back on any projects, internships, or similar group situations, and tell your interviewers about the role you played, what the problem was, and how you distilled it into the three or four things that really mattered.Now that it looks like interviews will be going all-virtual for at least the next several months, hiring experts offered tips on how to best shine during a video call.

"Talk about things that are really interesting to you: What is it about Latham & Watkins that makes you motivated to join the firm?" he said. " I think if you really study up on the firm and your interest in it and the genuine nature of the interaction, it's going to help you deal with the fact that it's occurring over video rather than in person.
